Preta Gil says she decided to separate because marriage did not make her feel good: ‘Survival instinct’

Preta Gil talked about the cancer treatment, what has changed in her life since then and the separation from Rodrigo Godoy, with whom she had been together for eight years. The singer confirmed the end of the relationship at the end of May, after rumors point to a betrayal of the personal trainer.

“It was my decision, but it was already ending. The marriage did not survive oncological treatment. It is not so pragmatic, we keep trying to justify it. There are nuances in a separation as painful as mine was. But I am part of it, yes. The We couldn’t get through that,” he said in an interview
to Marie Claire magazine.

The singer discovered bowel cancer earlier this year and has since undergone radiotherapy and chemotherapy sessions. The artist reflected on the statistics of the National Council of Mastology, that 70% of women undergoing cancer treatment are abandoned by their partners, and stated that the idea that they need to be taken care of is sexist.

“Unfortunately I am part of that statistic, yes, because in fact the relationship ended. My survival instinct made me want to separate, even though I had cancer, because it wasn’t doing me any good. And it’s sexist to think that I need to stay married to be cared for. Why is the husband more important than the mother, father, sister, friend? This is a trait of patriarchy, which places such great importance on men.”

Preta also spoke about the imminence of death and the perception that her life is finite, and that she started to rethink the subject after a conversation with her father, musician Gilberto Gil.

“Death is a very taboo subject, but I have a father who talks about it in a natural way. We have talked a lot. After the septicemia, we had such a real, beautiful conversation that I really started to see the death of another way. It’s a reality that finitude can come to me faster. I’ve always been very afraid of dying, today I’m not anymore.”
