The film’s director, Greta Gerwig, and production designer, Sarah Greenwood, revealed how pink was used so heavily on set that it caused an international shortage
Speaking to Architectural Digestthe director, Greta Gerwigand the production designer, Sarah Greenwoodrevealed that such a large amount of pink color was used to create it Barbieland on the set of the film, which sold out of all the stock the company had for worldwide supplies.
Gerwig wanted to create a fictional world for her protagonist Margot Robbie where everything will be exclusively pink – from the life-size dollhouses to the streets and lampposts – so she asked everything to be painted by hand instead of using CGI.
“The world has run out of pink“, said the director herself, who, however, had referred from the beginning to her vision for Barbie’s world to look as “authentic” as possible and to “maintain the childishness” – elements that for Gerwig were of primary importance for the film .
“I wanted the pinks to be very bright and everything to be almost over the topGerwig emphasized, adding that she didn’t want to forget what made her love Barbie when she was a little girl herself.
