Her story “Dimitra” of Lesvos from Skala Sykamias (real name Dimitris Kalogiannis), who shocked the Panhellenic and inspired the show “The rose is a rose” presented at Piraeus 260 as part of the Athens – Epidaurus Festival (30/6 to 03/7) directed by Pantelis Dentakis . The leading role is played by Christos Stergioglou.

Katerina Louvaris-Fasoi’s original work is inspired by the real life of Dimitra, but it presents on stage another story, that of Dionysia, who lives in an old house with her yard cats as her only company. She sings and dreams, wears colorful clothes – like “Dimitra” of Lesvos – opens the house to foreigners and locals and accepts their hatred and ridicule.

The dramatic story of “Dimitra” actually begins at the age of 14, when Dimitra told her parents that she was a girl and they reacted by locking her up in an institution and when she came out they secretly put strong drugs in her food. She escaped to Athens where she lived homeless for years, but eventually returned to Skala Sykaminias to take care of her sick mother for 25 years. When she died, he started wearing women’s pants and blouses and it wasn’t until 2014 that he put on a dress for the first time and went out in public.

A show that moves and worries, inviting us to question every prejudice that leads to the extermination of the different.
