The Palace of the Old Parliament in Kolokotroni Square, in the center of Athens houses the National Historical Museum as it is directly connected to Greek history: it is the first permanent roof of the Greek Parliament.

The museum’s Permanent Exhibition houses impressive exhibits from Byzantium and the Greek Revolution of 1821 to the Balkans and World War II.

Among other things, there is also a macabre exhibit. It is located in the room dedicated to the three islands that played an important role in ’21 – Spetses, Hydra and Psara – and it is none other than the heart of Konstantinos Kanaris!

Among miniatures of Greek and Turkish ships, inside a silver hydria is kept the heart of the prankster and legendary fighter of 1821 (see the snapshot at 4.50 of the video).

The heart was removed from his body by doctor Ioannis Zochios and kept with respect to remind the great moments of the nation.

On the sides of the urn are engraved in golden letters the names of Chios and Psara, Cesme and Alexandria – places where the glorious sea warrior worked – and the phrase “Hail the heart of Admiral Kanaris” is engraved on the lykythos.

Among the other impressive exhibits, the uniform of Theodoros Kolokotronis with the emblematic headdress stands out, as well as the high-priestly miter of Chrysostom of Smyrna, who was murdered by the Turks during the destruction of the city in 1922.
