No one can predict the ending that Panos Routsi’s hunger strike will have asks for the obvious: to find out if it is his son’s body and what caused his death. But whatever the ending – with hope, of course, always satisfy his reasonable request – his gaze will never let us forget. And it will not let us forget because it has something very true, it is penetrating and full of dignity. His immediacy does not let you rest if you are a man with elementary sensitivity.
On the back of Mr. Rucci are now playing political games. The minister is intransigent, Opera has a full understanding and after 19 days of hunger strike, he supports his fair request. The opposition has also found a “convenient” issue to play a role in its overall inadequacy to convince it that it can take the country’s reins seriously.
But whatever political games are played on the back of a man who, at a price for his life, seeks the truth, his gaze has been engraved in collective memory. The “Tempi” have been engraved in collective memory. And it may be that the people who are in a hunger strike in the Constitution may not have the volume and pulse of earlier concentrations, as everyday life devours everything, but people will not forget the inadequacy of the government and authorities to provide satisfactory answers for the rail.
And it is truly shameful to go to Greece, the European Prosecutor Laura Kovesi for Tempi and OPEKEPE and to say meaningfully that “it is time to clean Aegia’s stables”.
An Albanian and a Romanian – fellow citizens of similar origin who have been so depressed in the country in the past – are there a reason to unfold the full range of corruption in Greece? I wish at least to those who have not succeeded in the country’s political staff for years.
The gaze of Mr. Rucci, however, and all the relatives of the victims in Tempi and the survivors, will not be forgotten. Their struggle, even if it does not have results as they wish themselves, has caused a deep crack in the Greek political system. And at the latest in the 2027 parliamentary elections the check will be redeemed.
