An octet that releases one of the most important national rock albums, tragically loses one of its members and, little by little, its line-up is reduced until it becomes, for a few years, a trio of lesser expression in Brazilian music.
It was the disagreements, the excesses and a certain dazzle with the success that led Titãs to break down as a band, said Nando Reis in the second episode of his narrative podcast, Lugar de Sonho. The artist reported episodes he lived alongside the band – good times and others not so much, which ended up influencing his departure, after more than 20 years of partnership.
“In my mind, the genesis and definition of Titãs as a musical identity took place in the first 10 years, while Arnaldo was there. The subsequent 10 years, which include ‘Acústico [MTV]’, are consequences of that. I treat them as a correlative product of what we’ve created before,” she says.
Nando recalls that the musicians, today with the remaining seven gathered on the victorious “Titãs Encontro” tour, played 200 shows a year, in a routine in which everything (except the hours of sleep) was in excess —booze and drugs, mainly .
“I lived my childhood and adolescence at the age of 30. I make this relationship. I dazzled, I was silly, I did a lot of nonsense”, he confesses. For Nando, many of the professional decisions taken at that time were wrong. “We were greedy, we preferred success.”
Friendship with Marcelo Fromer, who died after being run over in 2001, was also one of the topics covered in this episode.
“The tragedy did not end there because Marcelo died in June and Cássia [Eller] died in December of the same year. In the space of six months, I lost my best friend and my best friend. It was a bomb in my life. I can say that all the decisions I took from then on, the most drastic ones, like leaving the Titans and also separating, are related to these two events”, he said in the podcast, created to celebrate his 60 years of life, celebrated in January.
