Andre Leon Talley, the legendary fashion journalist who helped shape Vogue during his many decades with the magazine, has died at the age of 73.

According to TMZ, he died while being treated at White Plains Hospital in New York. The cause of death has not yet been revealed.

The pioneering fashion author, known for his high-profile friendships and strong personality, helped shape the fashion industry.

“Taley played a key role in the vision and direction of American Vogue in the ’80s and’ 90s, when he rose to the top of the magazine, he eventually became a news director – from ’83 to ’87 – and a year later creative director of the magazine “reports TMZ.

Andre Lyon Talley grew up in North Carolina and became involved with fashion at a young age, seeing women parading in and out of church. He was raised by his grandmother, who encouraged his interest in art, style and creativity and later attended Brown University, where he studied French Literature.

After college, he did an internship for Diana Briland, the legendary Vogue editor-in-chief, at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York while she worked at the Costume Institute.

Taley worked for Andy Warhol’s Interview Magazine and later for the industry’s Women’s Wear Daily. While at WWD he moved to Paris, became the head of the Paris office and was in constant contact with the most powerful designers in the industry. His reviews were constantly gaining attention and he developed close friendships with Karl Lagerfeld and Yves Saint Laurent.

He eventually joined Vogue, where he met Anna Windour, who was also an editor at the time. The two developed a working relationship, and when Windour became editor-in-chief, Taley became creative director, a position he held from 1988 to 1995.

He then worked as an editor-contributor to the magazine and as the editor of Numero Russia. He said he left Vogue for Numero because his salary was higher. When he left Numero, a year later, he said the reason was Russia’s anti-LGBTQ + laws.

Taley was an imposing figure in the fashion scene because of his height, his tendency to wear colorful kaftans and his eccentricity.

She advised Obama on fashion, introducing Michelle Obama to designer Jason Wu, who created the dress she wore to her husband’s swearing-in ceremony.

As a fashion historian she has collaborated on various documentaries, “Valentino: The Last Emperor”, “Manolo: The Boy Who Made Shoes for Lizards” and “The First Monday in May”.

The documentary “The Gospel According to Andre” focuses on the life, the people who inspired him and his career.

“No one in the fashion world can ignore Andre. This is partly due to his incredible knowledge of fashion, his vast network and his impressive views and partly due to his extremely fancy appearance. “As an African-American, with a height of about 1.85 m, he stands out in the mostly white fashion”, it is emphasized in the synopsis of the film.

“I burned the earth with my talent and let my light shine,” Andre Lyon Taley told The Irish Times.
