They create a $200 million fund to support the expansion and management of Brazil’s protected and indigenous areas
The Protecting Our Planet (POP) Challenge announced its new partnership with the Brazilian government to invest $200 million to support the expansion and management of Brazil’s protected and indigenous areas.
Over the next four years, the $200 million donation will be used to help Brazil achieve zero deforestation in the Amazon and accelerate the South American country’s transition to a sustainable and green economy.
The new coalition works closely with Brazil’s Environment and Amazonian Indigenous Ministries and Leonardo DiCaprio’s Re:wild conservation non-profit and Jeff Bezos’ Bezos Earth Fund.
“We are inspired by Brazil’s ambitious goals to protect the Amazon, one of the most important places for wildlife on the planet, and are excited to support these efforts through the Protecting Our Planet Challenge,” said DiCaprio.
The pledge aims to ensure zero deforestation in the Amazon, preserve 145 million hectares of undefined public Amazon lands, strengthen the management of existing protected areas and the rights of indigenous peoples, and combat both deforestation in protected areas of the natives as well as the cutting of forests to create pastures.
