It is not always easy to find the next political thriller that will captivate you with each of its separate episodes. Scandals, entanglements and corruption need special attention in their handling, especially in a series. The Journalist seems to be doing perfectly well and keeping our interest undiminished until the final drop.
In The Journalist, a journalist struggles to expose and prove a political scandal
Anna Matsuda is a journalist, famous for the special way in which she conducts all her research and reporting. In this case she is faced with a political scandal and so her opponents are the most powerful people in her country. Thus begins a chase between reporters and bureaucrats where everyone tries to maintain their own interests. However, Anna Matsuda seems to have made it her life purpose to uncover all the conspiracies behind a new government deal and to enlighten the Japanese people about it.
The new series is based on the eponymous film released in 2019
In fact, the director of the film, Michihito Fujii, returned this time to the director’s chair on behalf of Netflix. Both the film and the series accomplish much more than the elaborate setting of an anxious plot. By presenting a “fictional” Japanese political world, they reveal lesser-known aspects of Japanese culture, while at the same time criticizing practices that have been in place for many years.
At some point the series may seem slow. However, we can say with confidence that the solution of the plot will reward you. The story is not something you have never seen before, especially from American productions. The Journalist, however, manages to win you over with the very well thought-out interpretations of its characters but also with its dark atmosphere.
The series consists of 10 episodes which are available on Netflix.
