Stanley Tucci believes that actors should be able to play people with a different sexual identity than their own. The actor spoke to BBC Radio 4’s Desert Island Discs and when asked what his views were on the subject of straight actors playing gay roles, Tucci replied:Obviously, I think that’s a good thing».

He has played gay characters in the 2006 comedy The Devil Wore Prada and the 2020 drama Supernova.

“I’m always very flattered when gay men come up to me and talk about my role in ‘The Devil Wore Prada,’ or they talk about ‘Supernova’ and say, ‘That was so beautiful,’ or that, ‘You did it the right way.'” he said and added: “Because it’s often not done the right way».

The Oscar-winning actor went on to say that he believes that “an actor is first and foremost an actor… He’s supposed to play different people… That’s the whole point».

Tucci added that he feels most comfortable portraying someone other than himself on screen and on stage.

I feel much safer on stage than in real life“, he said on the BBC radio show. “Sometimes, going to a cocktail party or dinner, I am very nervous».

When asked if he wishes to take on more leading roles, the actor said he is happy with the way his career has turned out.

There were times, of course, when I wanted to be the star, there’s no doubt about that. But, as it turns out, it’s fine, and I feel very lucky to have gotten a lot of roles with substance“, he said.
