In 73 years – the great director passed away on November 13, 1974 – de Sica starred in hundreds of films, directed some of the greatest masterpieces of European cinema, married twice (it is said that he led a “double life” by changing the pointers of clocks in his house so that he could celebrate Christmas with both his families), he was a Catholic, but also a communist, he was addicted to gambling, while his second wife, actress Maria Mercander, was the sister of Ramon Mercander who murdered Trotsky.
