The legendary French war photojournalist Marie-Laure de Decker died today Saturday in Toulouse, at the age of 75, as was announced by her family.

De Decker breathed her last in a city hospital after a long illness.

She was born in Bonn (Anaba, Algeria) and started her career as a model. However, he very quickly went behind the camera and captured, in the late 60s, artists such as Man Ray, Marcel Deschamps and Philippe Soupeau.

Her passion for travel drove her to Vietnam, where he decided to cover the war photographically. Although he had little experience, he won the war. “I was thinking: people will see that I’m not a real photojournalist, that I don’t have my own camera, that I only have this old Leica. In fact, and this I found out later, that old Laika was a miracle.” she herself recounted in her 1985 memoir.

De Decker believed that it was not easy for a woman to become a war correspondent: “they never take them seriously”, he was saying. But, on the other hand, women also had advantages, as she experienced in South Africa: “They don’t kill them immediately, they give them a chance.”

She worked for the Gamma agency from 1971 until it was dissolved in 2009. For her, the end was bad: when she asked for her photos, they only gave her the black and white ones, but not the color ones. She then lost her lawsuit seeking copyright in the digitized photos.
