Beginning her career as an actress, she gained international fame for her on- and off-screen relationship with Serge Gainsbourg.

With Serge Gainsbourg they became a famous couple of Parisian artistic life and became famous in 1969 with the album Jane Birkin-Serge Gainsbourg, especially with the song “Je t’aime … moi non plus”, a sensual and provocative song that had worldwide hit, which Gainsbourg had originally written for his mistress Brigitte Bardot.

In 1971, their daughter, Charlotte Gainsbourg, also a famous actress and singer, was born. In 1976, Birkin appeared in the controversial film Je t’aime moi non plus directed by Gainsbourg.

The couple met while co-starring in the 1969 French satirical romantic comedy Slogan.

“I’ve always been an optimist and I realize it’s still going to take some time before I can be on stage with you again. I love being with you so much,” she said in a statement at the time.

More concert cancellations followed after the star suffered a stroke in September 2021.

Born in London, she moved to France in the late 1960s. Although she was naturalized French she had always maintained a British accent that was recognizable by the tone of her voice. She was married to the composer John Barry with whom she had a daughter Kate. This was followed by her relationship with Serge Gainsbourg with whom in addition to a personal relationship she had a professional relationship that brought her to the top of the charts in 1969. During their relationship they had a daughter, Charlotte Gainsbourg. After their separation, Birkin shared her life with director Jacques Dulon with whom she also had a daughter.
