Audiences loved her for her sensitivity, accentuated by the delicate British accent she maintained throughout her life.
She was the favorite Englishwoman of the French, a fashion icon and a voice with a delicate accent: Jane Birkin died at the age of 76, found dead today in Paris, after leaving her mark in song and cinema.
The information, published by Le Parisien newspaper and BFMTV channel, was confirmed to AFP by a source familiar with the matter.
Originally from London, but naturalized French, her name was identified with that of Serge Gainsbourg. She had recently announced that she is facing serious health problems that forced her to cancel concerts.

She appeared frail in February at the latest César ceremony — the French film awards — alongside her daughter, actress and singer Charlotte Gainsbourg, and her granddaughter Alice.
Jane Birkin enjoyed worldwide success with songs such as “Je t’aime… moi non plus”, a duet with Gainsbourg in 1969, “Jane B” in the same year or “Ex-fan des sixties” in 1978 .
Audiences loved her for her sensitivity, accentuated by the delicate British accent she maintained throughout her life.
“Unthinkable to live in a world without your light,” singer Etienne Dao, one of her closest people and composer of the album “Oh, pardon tu dormais….”, released in 2020, wrote on Instagram .
French Prime Minister Elisabeth Bourne hailed “an unforgettable icon” who “transcends generations”.
In the cinema he played in Antonioni’s “Blow up”, a Palme d’Or award-winning film in 1967, “La Piscine” with Romy Snyder and Alain Delon in 1969 and collaborated with directors such as Jean-Luc Godard, Jacques Duillon or Anies Varda.
The relationship with Serge Gainsbourg, whom she met on a film set in 1968, gave a new direction to her career. And it made the pair a mythical duo in 70s Paris with a mixture of passion, charm and scandal.
Jane will end up suffocating in front of him who is lost in his excesses which are sometimes doubled by violent outbursts.
In 1981, she leaves their apartment on the rue Verneig, Paris, together with her daughters Kate (whom she had with John Barry) and Charlotte and rebuilds her life with the director Jean Duillon with whom she stayed for 13 years and had a daughter, singer Lou Duayon.
Long after Serge Gainsbourg’s death in 1991 and despite the tough trials she’s been through– like the suicide of her photographer daughter, Kate Barry, in 2013, then leukemia that took a long time to heal, and a mild stroke in 2021 — she continued to sing the songs of the man with whom she had been a mythical couple.
In 1984, the fashion house Hermes named one of its bags after her.
She had been awarded the distinction of the Order of the British Empire and in France the Commander of the Order of Arts and Letters.
But he refused the Legion of Honor in 1989, believing that “only heroes” should receive this distinction.
It was a way of saying goodbye to her father David, a Royal Navy officer who had transported resistance fighters from Britain to France during World War II. Her father died in 1991, on the day of Serge Gainsbourg’s funeral.
The circumstances of Jane Birkin’s death have not been clarified.
