Can having sex help you lose weight? But losing weight enough to replace the benefits of regular exercise and a balanced diet? Celebrities like Kim Kardashian, Kate Hudson and Cameron Diaz guarantee that they do. They are some of the supporters of the controversial “sex diet”, a practice that consists of having intense sex for consecutive hours at least three times a week.
It was in this ecstatic way that, according to the English press, Kardashian lost three kilos in seven days when she was at the height of her relationship with Kanye West, a few years ago. Kate and Cameron have already said that they also had good results with the technique, which, however, is far from unanimous.
For endocrinologist Maria Edna de Melo, it’s almost a joke to believe that it’s possible to lose weight healthily by having sex for hours on end without breaks, and at a prearranged frequency. “Talking about weight loss with anecdotal experiences stigmatizes serious treatment”, says the professional.
She warns of one more problem that may come with this “diet”. “Prolonged sexual practice can cause genital injuries and microlacerations that can progress to infections,” she says. Not to mention the “obligation” to have sex for so long, at a frantic pace, to achieve the intended goals. “Sexual health is important for a couple’s life and the benefits also involve the mental part”, says the doctor.
There is still no consensus on how many calories would be lost in this sexual marathon – there is talk of something around 8,000 in the three hours. Maria Edna insists that this “technique” does not bring good results and should be avoided. “The gym, exercises and, mainly, taking care of your diet remain the best recommendation for weight loss”, she defends.
Gynecologist Vanessa Matos also warns that prolonged sex can bring internal problems, more felt than seen. “Prolonged sexual intercourse can even generate urinary infection. Since the diet consists of an uninterrupted practice, vaginal lubrication can be compromised, causing injuries, which contributes to sexually transmitted diseases”, she says.
