Before departing Barcelona for Miami in early April, Shakira launched a scathing attack on Spanish tax authorities after it emerged she would stand trial for alleged offenses committed between 2012 and 2014.

It claimed it was being “persecuted” and accused Spain’s finance ministry of using “unacceptable methods to damage its reputation and force it into a settlement agreement”. He insisted he had no intention of making a last-minute deal and would go to trial.

A representative for the Colombian artist also clarified that she feels the country’s tax authorities are accusing her of lying about living outside of Spain “without evidence” for the years she was accused of tax fraud.

Spanish inspectors reportedly spent more than a year vetting Shakira, even visiting her favorite hairdressers in Barcelona and checking her social media, in order to prove she spent most of the three years in question in Spain.
