Three people died in a severe storm that lashed Slovenia and Croatia on Wednesday, as parts of Europe grappled with high temperatures and wildfires, authorities said.

In Croatia, two people were killed and several injured, the Civil Protection Department said on its website. Significant material damage occurred in several regions of the country, he added.

In Zagreb, the sky suddenly darkened and torrential rain broke out, while strong winds swept the area, resulting in flooding. Traffic was disrupted and roads were blocked due to fallen trees. The storm also caused power outages.

Zagreb’s emergency services asked citizens to be patient as they received hundreds of calls at the same time.

In neighboring Slovenia, a woman was killed by a falling branch and at least one person was injured, authorities said.

Forecasters in Serbia also sounded a weather alert and warned that a so-called supercell storm, which brings strong winds, hail and rain, was moving in from Croatia and was expected to hit the country later in the day.
