At the end of the beach of Ai-Yiannis west of the city of Lefkada, there is a secret: Behind the rocks, hidden from public view and with relatively difficult access, only on foot, there is an exotic, small beach: Kryoneri.

The island is famous for its vast, magical beaches, such as Kathisma and Porto Katsiki, but the locals – and those who have been “initiated” – do not change Krioneri at all.

Only by sea or air can one see this small but truly magical beach, with its icy blue waters. On foot, one can reach it by walking for about a quarter of a mile through a verdant path up the mountain and then descending behind the “nose” of the rock.

Just before the descent there is the roof of an old Italian artillery – the view from there towards the Ionian Sea and the entire beach of Agios Ioannis is breathtaking.

Usually the sea there is calm but – because the beach is small – a sudden wave can “take” your spread belongings so you only take the essentials, a towel, flip flops and a small bag with your personal belongings. You don’t need anything else…
