THE “Barbie” by Greta Gerwig is a phenomenon that costume designer Jacqueline Duran is still trying to understand.
“I had no idea it was going to be this big,” the costume designer told Variety when the film opened in theaters this weekend.
Among the viral trends that started the film starring Margot Robbie and has taken over the fashion industry and social media is the #BarbieCore, an homage to Mattel’s very feminine and very pink doll. Is pink aesthetic which has become a fashion staple combined with nostalgic accessories is the latest craze.
In the context of the phenomenon, the Oscar-winning costume designer partnered with ThredUp, an online high-end pre-owned clothing retailer, as they wanted to offer consumers a more sustainable way to participate in the summer pink trend.
“I love vintage clothes and always have. “Even if a small percentage of people who want to experience and play and be creative with #Barbiecore can turn to ThredUp and buy vintage creations to create their own unique look, then that will be great,” she noted.
Valentino fashion house artistic director Pierpaolo Pizzoli started by presenting 48 different fuchsia looks in his Fall 2022 collection. His fuchsia designs were then worn at major events.
The colors pink and fuchsia dominate everywhere and the hashtag #Barbiecore in the Tik Tok has gathered many millions of views. There are suggestions and buying guides for Barbie clothing.

Speaking about her work in the film, Jacqueline Duran explained that she used vintage pieces for the wardrobe of Ryan Gosling’s Ken and Margot Robbie.
He sourced mostly American vintage sportswear for Ken, but there wasn’t enough to dress the whole cast, so he looked for more in London.
The white “furry” coat worn by Gosling it’s fake he said and added, “But if you look closely at the interior lining, we’ve added designs of horses,” as after visiting California Ken became fascinated with horses.
Duran explained that when she and Gerwig were trying to decide what the less-than-perfect version of Ken would look like, she saw a photo of Sylvester Stallone wearing a fur coat and that became her main inspiration for Ken’s particular style.
