We all lie. Whether it is an innocent lie or a big and elaborate plot. Lying is part of human nature and whether we like it or not, according to Robert Feldman, a professor of psychology at the University of Massachusetts, is a very effective, social tactic.
According to Feldman, then, there are six main reasons why people distort the truth.
The so-called flattery
Flattery tends to deceive our fellow man and this I imagine does not come as a surprise to you. It has been observed that people spontaneously tend to feel distrustful of all forms of flattery because they know that it is not always an admittedly literal truth. Someone for example can give you a wonderful compliment to become your friend or your future boy / girl or to avoid embarrassment in your overall communication. Or even to make you trust him / her. Be that as it may, flattery is one of the main reasons why people distort their truth.
Lies because of embarrassment
You will probably have experienced it too. I am referring to that lie that is usually caused when we feel that our embarrassment is so intense that the only possible solution at that moment seems to be simply to be liked and accepted by others. Let me mention for example that classic: “Unfortunately I will not be able to come today, I do not feel very well”. We have all done this at some point in our lives and yes this is another innocent lie.
I have the “lie” to change your mind
People often lie to change the opinion of others or to achieve their goal. Such lies can even be used by a salesperson to sell a product in order to persuade us to buy it. Of course, our lives and daily life do not change if we buy it, but as a tactic it seems very effective. Often, at least.
The lie that seeks a positive sign
As we grow older, we learn, for better or worse, to become more skilled liars, which means that we tend to hide our truth for our own benefit or sometimes wrongly for our own benefit. The purpose here is usually to protect ourselves but in such a case it is more difficult to observe and say with confidence that this is dishonest behavior. Also, there are many who choose to lie to protect others and then themselves.
The lie of impression
And who does not subconsciously want to be liked? In some cases, it is very likely that the person distorts the truth just to intimidate someone with his words and behavior. A senior executive in a company, for example, may choose to lie in order not to feel challenged by other members of the company. The question here is whether it is worth living like this. I bet no and I also bet you agree with me.
Lying breeds more lies
Have you ever heard of so-called avalanche-like lies? If our lies start with a simple innocent statement, then without fully understanding it you will need to build a whole picture on this lie. So one lie brings more and this is something that none of us wants in any case. This is not a healthy behavior and a functional lifestyle. So as sweet as it may seem many times, as much as we need it, no lie is small, which is why honesty always wins. And if you ask me my opinion, it always stands out from kilometers.
