The 61st New York Film Festival announced its main line-up. Among the films of this year’s event is the long-awaited “Poor Things” by Giorgos Lanthimos with a brilliant cast of protagonists featuring Emma Stone, Willem Dafoe, Mark Ruffalo, Ramy Youssef, Christopher Abbot, Jerrod Carmichael and Margaret Qualley.

A few words about the film

The film is a film adaptation of Alasdair Gray’s novel of the same name (1992) by Oscar-nominated screenwriter Tony McNamara (“The Favored One”). It chronicles the life of a woman with ambiguous identity and memories, at the center of a gothic romance, a hallmark of the Victorian Era, with references to Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein.

In the film, the Bella Baxter (Emma Stone) is a young woman brought back to life by a brilliant and unorthodox scientist, Godwin Baxter (Willem Dafoe). Under Baxter’s tutelage, Bella is a willing “student”. She “thirsty” seeks the experience she lacks. Bella hits it off with Duncan Wedderburn (Mark Ruffalo), a prodigal lawyer, for a chaotic adventure around the world. Unaffected by the prejudices of her time, Bella decides to fight for equality and liberation.

“Poor Things”, before the New York Film Festival, is expected to make its world premiere at the 80th Venice International Film Festival. However, beyond the festival circuit, its theatrical release, which had been scheduled for September 8, was moved by Searchlight Pictures to December 8 due to the ongoing Hollywood actors’ and writers’ strike, which bans, among other things, union members to participate in the promotion of their new films and television series created by the major studios.
