Job worked with Hermès to create the 11 installations, which will be housed in 70 windows of 20 of the house’s stores in France
The “Life on Mars” installation for his shop windows Hermès fashion house designed Job Smeets of Studio Job. Taking its name from the well-known David Bowie song, the installation depicts a fictional settlement of the planet Mars by a series of horse-headed characters and their ‘space dog’. The sets, which wink at the climate crisis, include a French pommes frites shop on a volcano and a Mars Rover carrying an Hermès bag.

“In his own incredible way, Hermès interprets my ideas from my paintings of this surreal utopia or, rather, you should call it dystopia. It is a textile effect created with fabrics, leathers, sand, elaborate sewing that only Hermès can produce” said Smeets.
“I think the issue has to do with climate change as well as the utopian escapism but also the current debate about leaving this planet to colonize Mars“, he pointed out, speaking to Dezeen. “Especially in the world we live in, creating a perfect summer scene would betray ignorance. Something in all my work is a serious subject often laced with humor“, he added.
