A previously unknown country singer, 30-year-old Oliver Anthony, shot to the top of the US charts after the lyrics of ‘Rich Men North of Richmond’ struck a chord with farmers and workers in rural America.

The song, released Aug. 11 on YouTube, has more than 41 million views and has become an anthem for downtrodden residents of the Mid-Atlantic, Midwest and Southern states — who feel wronged by wealthy East and West Coast urbanites.

The song that shot him to the top of the charts:

Such was the unprecedented success that the song “Rich Men North of Richmond” opened Wednesday’s Fox News debate among eight candidates for the Republican presidential nomination — from which Donald Trump was absent. The Governor of Florida Ron DeSandis spoke about a song of disapproval of the economic policy of the Democratic President of the USA Joe Biden.

However, the purple-haired Oliver Anthony did not take kindly to the political hat. “It’s infuriating to see people in conservative media trying to identify with me,” he protested in a 10-minute video posted to YouTube. “It’s infuriating to see some musicians and politicians act like we’re friends, like we’re fighting the same battles,” he continued.

The song “Rich Men North of Richmond” (“Rich Men North of Richmond” – the capital of the state of Virginia) talks about the elite, inflation, taxes, excruciating work hours, poverty wages and welfare benefits. “It has nothing to do with Joe Biden, it goes way beyond Joe Biden,” the songwriter emphasizes.

“The right is trying to claim me as theirs and the left is trying to discredit me, I guess in retaliation. This bullshit has to stop!” declares Oliver Anthony.
