Former voice actor, Selton Mello lends his hoarse voice to antihero in podcast

Nelson França is a private detective who helped the police arrest a lot of people, but over the years, he ended up going blind. However, a serial killer he captured in the past returns to action and France suspects that he knows well who the author is.

Without the sight, would it be impossible to arrest him? Not for Selton Mello, who plays the investigator in “França eo Labirinto”, a 13-episode audio series that hits Spotify on the 29th of this month.

Born in 1972, Mello debuted as a voice actor in his teens, performing with the voices of heartthrobs like Tom Hanks and Ralph Macchio (okay, okay, not that heartthrob). Returning to the studios, then, was a step back in time — but with a twist.

Before, his raspy and unmistakable voice was present in several comedies. Now, on the podcast, heavy suspense. In the end, the return ended up being a mix of the two, as Selton pulled his strings so that France had a layer of humor at times.

“I went deeper into the detective and proposed to Deive and Alexandre [produtores] make the character a little more sarcastic, which was very well accepted”, explains Mello, in an interview with F5. “And so, France was built, an extremely insightful and observant detective. A true anti-hero.”

With binaural audio technology —a kind of 3D sound—, the audio series gains more realism, sometimes it seems that the character is right there by your side. Character that was created from some references.

“I grew up watching movies, series, suspense books and detectives, like Mandrake by Rubem Fonseca, Detective Espinosa, by Garcia-Roza, Bellini, by Tony Bellotto, the movie Coração Satânico, with Mickey Rourke…”, lists Mello , who starred in the series produced in partnership with Jovem Nerd.

From the detective and judging by the artist’s recent characters, the search is constant for challenging and very different roles. “I want to make a millionaire, a bolsominion, a peasant, an activist of the left… If I limit myself, then I leave the scene, close the curtain and leave”, he believes. “I don’t give up the profession because of criticism and I don’t even think I’m better. As I reached 50, I’m getting softer on the ship, I’m going to do what I want to do, in fact.”
