“The multi-faceted Nikos Perakis stands out, his charismatic and special directorial eye, but also his contribution as a production designer in emblematic films of Greek and world cinema”
One of the most distinctive and daring voices of modern Greek cinema, o Nikos Perakiswill be honored by the 64th Thessaloniki Film Festival, which will take place from November 2 to 12. Nikos Perakis will receive the Golden Alexander for his entire contribution to cinema, while a tribute will be screened with five films that highlight his great work.
Through this tribute, according to the Festival’s announcement, “the versatile Nikos Perakis is highlighted, his charismatic and special directing look, but also his contribution as a production designer to emblematic films of Greek and world cinema. Renovator of Greek comedy, with an emphasis on scathing political satire and the depiction of social absurdity, Nikos Perakis began his career in cinema in the 60s, studying set design and costume design at the Munich School of Fine Arts. After his military service in Armed Forces Television, he returned to Germany, where he began working as a set designer and production designer in film, theater and television, while also making his first directorial steps in the early 70s, in the early of the explosion of the New German Cinema.
Alongside his directorial career, Nikos Perakis continued his exciting journey as a production designer, collaborating with some of the biggest names in Greek and German cinema: From Volker Schlendorf to the Oscar-winning Foreign Language Film and Gold Phoenix Tambourlos, to Giorgos Panousopoulos and Giorgos Tseberopoulos through some of the most beloved Greek films.
As part of the Festival, the Greek Cinema & Television Study Laboratory (EMEKT) of the Department of Cinema, AUTh will organize a seminar for Nikos Perakis, in which important personalities from the academic world will speak. The tribute will show four of his films from different periods of his film career, as well as the iconic Tambourlo, which sheds light on his work as a production designer.
