El Greco
In 2007, the biography of Dominicos Theotokopoulos, known as El Greco, arrives on our screens, by the hand of Yiannis Smaragdis. 16 years later we are able to watch it on Netflix. The story, starting from Crete, home of Dominikos Theotokopoulos, takes us to Venice and from there to Toledo, following the artist’s path towards creation, love and freedom. Spanish, but also Greek actors play the leading roles in this period film, which looks like it was taken from a painting.

God Loves Caviar
God Loves Caviar and Ioannis Smaragdis the interesting biographies, as 2012 gives us yet another period biographical film, which, now, we can find on Netflix, which, this time, tells the life of Ioannis Varvakis , national benefactor, who started out as a pisces from Psara. The film follows him from the time he was a pirate in the Aegean, until his arrival at the court of Catherine the Great of Russia, his wanderings in the Caspian Sea, until his return to Greece during the Revolution. Adventurous and at the same time touching, God Loves Caviar outlines an entire era, through the life and work of its protagonist.

Happiness
Another Greek biographical film has come to Netflix, this time by Angelos Frantzis, starring the lyricist Eftychia Papagiannopoulou, who left Aydinio during the Asia Minor Disaster and came to Athens, where a creative, but also hectic life. In the film of the same name, we follow the lyricist in both her artistic and personal steps, as she struggles to escape from her demons, to find her calling, but also to survive in a world that is constantly changing. Touching, with comedic elements and lots of music, Eftychia takes us on a journey to another Athens and another era.

Little England
And we move on to Pantelis Voulgaris and a film about love, separation and loss, which, when it was released in 2013, drew all eyes on it, rising to the position of the 2nd most commercial film of the year. Based on the novel of the same name by Ioanna Karystianis, Little England begins by describing the love of two young people in the closed society of Andros, during the interwar period. A powerful and moving story, during the development of which the Greek society of that time is also outlined, which (if, of course, you haven’t already seen it) is worth putting on your list.
