A girl. That’s what Prince Charles wanted when Diana revealed that she was expecting the couple’s second child. Only on September 15, 1984, Harry was born and the now King Charles 3rd would have been disappointed. The story was told by Lady Di to writer Andrew Mortan during interviews for her biography “Diana: Her True Story”, released in the early 1990s.

Unreleased audio of the excerpt was released by the British press this Friday (1), a day after the 26th anniversary of the tragic death of William and Harry’s mother. Diana and her boyfriend Dodi Al-Fayed died in a car accident in Paris, France, on August 31, 1997. The Egyptian businessman’s driver was behind the wheel, when he lost control of the car when it hit a pillar at about 105 km/h in from a tunnel. He was running from the paparazzi.

Diana states on the recording what Charles said to stepmother Raine Spencer at Harry’s christening. “‘We are so disappointed, we wanted a girl.” Countess Spencer then scolded the member of the British royal family and replied that he should “realize how lucky it is to have a son”.

The release of the audio happens because of the new documentary about Lady Di. The production is a continuation of “Diana: In Her Own Words” (2017) and will be released next year.

Tom Jennings, producer of both projects, told ABC television: “When the first movie came out, people were amazed because they had never heard Diana talk like that before. It’s a very difficult style of storytelling to do, but I think it’s as close to the truth as you can get. It’s important, as part of Diana’s legacy, to allow more of these tapes to be heard,” he explained.
