Gabriel Medina and Yasmin Brunet end their marriage after 1 year

Gabriel Medina, 28, and Yasmin Brunet, 33, are no longer together. The end of the marriage was confirmed by the surfer’s press office.

The news of the end comes three days after Medina announced that he will not participate in the first two stages of the 2022 WSL (World Surf League) season to preserve his physical and mental health.

“As much as I want to be in the water surfing and competing, I’m not physically and emotionally up to it. And acknowledging that I’ve reached the limit has been a tough process. Late last year, I injured my hip. Since then, I was doing physiotherapy, I took the vaccine and I’ve been taking care of myself to be well for this year. However, I’m still not 100%”, he said at the time.

A day after the announcement of her withdrawal from competitions, the model supported Medina’s decision in text on social networks. “Last year was a very difficult year for me and for Gabriel. Many times we were massacred without any need. Many lies were told and we had to swallow many things to not take the focus off the competition, because at the end of the day the objective was to make him fulfill his dream of being a three-time champion and we did”, he wrote.

Medina and Brunet got married in late 2020 in a ceremony in Hawaii after less than a year of dating — and without the presence of relatives.

According to a report by UOL, the decision to end the marriage would have come from him because of Yasmin’s jealousy. He would have left the mansion where the two lived in Maresias, on the coast of São Paulo, last week.

FIGHT WITH THE FAMILY

Shortly after the wedding, in February 2021, the couple’s problems with his family began to take public shape. Medina and Brunet stopped following his mother and stepfather on social media. Simone Medina and Charles Saldanha also stopped following their son and daughter-in-law’s publications.

According to a report in the Extra newspaper, published at the time, the parents would not have approved the lightning marriage and would be worried about the influence of the model on their son’s career.

The removal would have culminated in the dismissal of Charles Saldanha, who had accompanied him since the beginning of his career. The two-time world champion later confirmed that Australian Andy King, who has worked with big names in world surfing, would be his new coach.

Officially, Medina stated that the decision was made so that Saldanha could dedicate himself to the career of his sister, Sophia Medina.

“I was thinking of everyone, I want to let my dad do the work with my sister, she needs it more than I do right now,” he told the specialized website Waves. “I’m getting older and I feel like I can do this on my own. Having Andy by my side really gives me more confidence because he’s a great surfer, he understands a lot about surfing and yes, it’s been fun.”

According to Veja magazine, Simone even sent a message to her son offending Yasmin and her mother, Luiza Brunet, who had “unpublishable terms”. To the publication, the surfer’s mother-in-law countered: “People have nothing to do with their lives and exhibit this disgusting behavior”. “But they are whole and whole,” he said of the couple. “I’m proud of both of you.”

On December 22 of last year, when Gabriel turned 28, his mother patted him on social media, implying that she would be willing to reconcile with him. “Son, congratulations on your day,” he wrote in the caption of a photo with the two together.

“This photo day was very special, we laughed, we hugged, we exchanged confidences, I got dizzy from running so much”, she said about the day the image was taken. “That’s it, it’s been 28 long years of a lot of history, a lot of dedication and a lot of complicity.”

The surfer did not respond to the post, at least publicly.
