Originally released in 1993 as a 12-song album, ‘In Utero’ was Nirvana’s first work to debut at the top of the Billboard Hot 100. Now, the entire body of work will be reissued in various formats: 8LP super deluxe box set, 5CD super deluxe box set, 1LP + 10″ edition, 2CD edition and digital super deluxe edition.

Each deluxe edition contains a total of 72 tracks, including 53 unreleased tracks, made up of two concerts held to release In Utero – 1993’s Live in Los Angeles and 1994’s Live in Seattle, the band’s last concert in their home country – and six other live tracks made around the same time in Rome, Italy, Springfield, Massachusetts, and New York.

In an interview with Rolling Stone in 2013, Grohl talked about the making of the album and why it was difficult for him to listen to his songs. “The album should sound like it did the day it was released. This is my problem with the disc. I used to love listening to him. And I don’t anymore, because of that».

The Foo Fighters frontman continued: “For me, if you listen to it without thinking about Kurt’s death, you can understand the original intent of the record. Like my kids. They know I was in Nirvana. They know Kurt was killed. I haven’t told them that he killed himself. So when they hear “In Utero,” they’ll have that fresh perspective—the original intent of the album, as listeners hearing it for the first time. Someday they will find out what happened».
