Ethan Hawke Doesn’t Mind Fostering Hollywood Nepotism: ‘I’m Not Ashamed’

by

Nepotism and the supposed little help in the career of young artists who are children of actors, grandchildren of directors and grew up in an environment already conducive to success has become the subject of intense debate in recent times. There is even a popular term to designate them: nepobabies.

Even if some swear up and down that talent is what matters most, Ethan Hawke assumes he is a “nepo father”. His daughter, Maya Hawke, from his former marriage to Uma Thurman, participated in “Stranger Things” at the beginning of her career, in 2019. Since then, the 25-year-old has been in other productions and stars in a film directed by father.

“Simply put, I’m a nepo dad. And I’m not ashamed of it,” he said in an interview with Variety magazine. “If someone wants to criticize us for working together, that’s totally fair. You have to let people have their opinion. You just have to try to do a good job when you’re on stage.”

The pair worked together on the production “Wildcat”, in which Maya plays writer Flannery O’Connor and is directed by her own father. She admits that she felt insecure at various times during filming because she needed to prove herself as an actress.

“My father has been a great teacher for me and we want to work together. We enjoy being with each other, but the internet is not very nuanced.”
