The Japanese prison in Nara, east of the city of Osaka, which was built in 1908 and designated a cultural asset in Japan in 2017, will be converted into a 48-room luxury hotel.
The building even recently became world famous after the second season of Netflix’s hit dystopian Japanese series ‘Alice in Borderland’ was filmed there.
It is an iconic red Japanese brick building built by the prison workers themselves.
The architectural plan is star-shaped, with five detention wings extending from a central command post.
The prison complex has an impressive main gate in the front yard of the two-storey administrative building.
According to insider.com the Hoshinoya Nara Prison Hotel is expected to open in early 2026. In fact, it was originally scheduled to open in 2021, but its inauguration was delayed.
According to Hoshino Resorts, the new hotel will provide guests with a restaurant, lounge and museum and will be “a prestigious project for the government.
