Valanari: The impressive double waterfall of Penteli – Watch video

by

On the slopes of Penteli, with a total length of up to 14 km, originates the stream Valanari, also known as Kalisiorema, Lykorema or simply Megalo Rema.

It is a wonderful “water road” that ends at the Great Stream of Rafina, since it is primarily connected with the waters of many other streams of Eastern Attica.

The name of the Valanari stream is attributed mainly to the oak forest that once dominated the surrounding hills, many years before the catastrophic fires changed the image of Mount Pentelikos.

A few kilometers after the sources of the stream, in the area of Drafi, the waters of Valanaris create the legendary waterfalls of Penteli. The waterfalls, double or otherwise twin at times, are formed as the water, coming from Penteli, stagnates just before it falls vertically at this point, thus forming a wonderful natural spectacle. But when it rains a lot, the stream turns into a strong torrent and so the 6-meter waterfall absorbs the other half, changing its basic image.

The waterfalls are located just a few meters below Achaion Avenue, in the middle of the long straight line of the boulevard. To get there, all you have to do is walk a very short dirt downhill route of about 100 meters, but be careful since it is relatively steep. Towards the end, he just has to decide if he wants to be at the base or at the top of the waterfalls.

Both the shallow lake formed by the running water and the small natural pool at the top of the waterfall, are an oasis of coolness a few kilometers from the center of Athens, while the waters of Valanaris that cross the area, give a necessary watery note so for people as well as for nature itself and its enormous needs.
