The COB (Brazilian Olympic Committee) announced this Sunday (30) the first case of Covid-19 in the Brazilian delegation that is in Beijing for the Winter Games. Athlete Erick Vianna, 29, from the bobsled team, tested positive for the new coronavirus on Saturday (29), as soon as he landed in the Chinese capital.
After performing a new test on Sunday, the diagnosis was confirmed. Erick is asymptomatic and is already in isolation in a hotel, according to the protocols established by the Beijing 2022 Organizing Committee.
The athlete will remain in isolation, under the supervision of the COB medical department, until he/she has two consecutive negative tests within a 24-hour interval.
According to the committee, the athlete had also tested positive earlier this month, when he was in Brazil.
The other members of the Brazilian bobsled team are free to train normally. The two-person sled category will have the first competition on February 14th. The quartet’s test will be on the 19th.
The Brazilian team is formed by Edson Bindilatti, Edson Martins, Rafael Souza, Jefferson Sabino, in addition to Erick. Sabino was initially called up as a reserve precisely for unforeseen events.
Thirty-four new Covid-19 infections have been detected among people related to the Games, according to the organizing committee. Of those, 13 are athletes or team officials who test positive after arriving in the country on Saturday.
Of the total infected, 23 were among the new arrivals at the airport, while 11 were people who were already in the “closed circuit” bubble, which separates people linked to the event from the general population to try to contain the spread of infections.
