“The Exiles” by M. Madenis from today at the National Library

by

The painting exhibition entitled “The Exiles” by Michalis Madenis, an art universe with food figures of a psychiatric hospital, opens today at the National Library.

The invisible “population surplus” of society, people marginalized from life and themselves look at the viewer in a riveting way as they emerge through a dark background illuminated brightly, beyond place and time: “Thus, the viewer is given the opportunity to pay attention all the details of the depicted, which in turn, lead him to what social conventions usually taught him to avoid: the human gaze “notes Stavros Zoumboulakis, who curated the exhibition.

Michalis Madenis, from his first solo exhibition in 1992 in Athens (Nees Morfes) and his final installation in 1994 in Greece, after completing his studies in the Netherlands, remains faithful to the documentary painting with anthropocentric themes. “In his works starring the naked male body, with an emphasis on his human condition. The expressionist mood is evident in the emotional charge of the characters and in the somewhat melancholy atmosphere that surrounds them. Discreet symbolism indicates the mortality of the body and its sanctity. The exuberant presence of the naked, without referring directly to models of classical beauty, emphasizes the humanistic character of this artistic proposal and its deeper connection with the history of culture. The solid design performance of the forms, the evocative compositions and the expressive use of color, are the main characteristics of his visual idiom “.

He has presented his work in many solo exhibitions in Greece, and participated in several group exhibitions in Greece and abroad (Netherlands, China, Germany, Turkey, Egypt).

From 2003 to 2018 he worked at the National Gallery-Museum of Alexandros Soutzos, in the field of educational programs and in the children’s workshop. The exhibition “The Exiles” at the National Library is curated by NP Paisios. Sponsors: Konstantinos and Nasia Euripides.

It will last until 31/03/2022 on the second floor of the EBE at the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center, with free entrance for the public, observing the valid health protocols of the pandemic.
