The prolific and award-winning Norwegian author Jon Fosse has been awarded the 2023 Nobel Prize in Literature, according to an announcement by the Swedish Academy.

Fosse is awarded “for his innovative plays and prose that give voice to the unspeakable.”

Jon Fosse was born in 1959 in Haugesund, Norway and has been living in Bergen since the mid-70s.

In 1983 he published his first novel “Red, Black” which was followed by numerous other novels, poetry collections, essays, plays and children’s books.

“Jon Fosse is one of the most prolific playwrights in the world today and has become increasingly recognized for his prose. The human condition is the central theme of the work, regardless of genre,” the Nobel Academy said in a statement.
