More than a decade after her tragic death, the music of Amy Winehouse is still a huge success. This week, the late Grammy-winning singer’s music video for “Back to Black” surpassed one billion views on YouTube, making her part of an elite group of musicians to achieve this impressive feat.

“Back to Black” was written by Mark Ronson and Winehouse, inspired by her troubled relationship with ex-husband Blake Fielder-Civil, who left her for an ex-girlfriend two years before they reconciled and married in 2007. The couple divorced in 2009.

The song’s lyrics find Winehouse longing for the relationship, however difficult it was. “We only said goodbye / I died a hundred times / you go back to her / and I go back to the black,” he sings on the song’s chorus.

‘Back to Black’, released on her self-titled album in 2007, initially peaked at No.25 on the UK Singles Chart that year, before peaking at No.8 after Winehouse’s death. It has since become one of her signature hits and has been covered by many artists, including Beyonce with André 3000 for the film ‘The Great Gatsby’.

Last year, Ronson spoke about his experience writing and producing the song with Winehouse and uploaded a related video on TikTok. “Hello, I’m Mark Ronson. For those of you who may not know me, I wrote the song ‘Back to Black’ with Amy Winehouse about 15 years ago on this very piano here,” the 46-year-old musician said, showing fans the grand piano where he worked with Winehouse. “Amy came to my studio right here. We met for the first time and I loved her immediately,” Ronson continued.
