Her rise from a South London schoolgirl to one of the world’s most famous models is the stuff of legend…
She was the first black model to appear on the cover of French Vogue and a muse for designers such as Gianni Versace. He referenced a Beyonce song by name. Now, four decades after her career began, the Naomi Campbell “writes” history again.
On Thursday, the V&A in London announced that its next major fashion exhibition will be dedicated to Campbell, marking the first time a model has been the focus of an exhibition at the museum. Previous record-breaking V&A shows have been dedicated to the likes of David Bowie, Christian Dior and Coco Chanel.

Naomi, by her first name alone, hints at the magnitude of Campbell’s fame, but beyond that, the recognition from the museum cements her “transformation” from catwalk model to cultural icon.
THE Sonnet Stanfillsenior curator at the V&A, said: “She’s the epitome of fashion modeling, but she’s also been at the forefront of expanding our perception of what a model can be.».
Alongside designer pieces from the model’s wardrobe, her close friend, outgoing British Vogue editor-in-chief Edward Enninful, curates the best fashion photos, while another section will showcase her charity work. Speaking to the Guardian, Enninful said: “I knew from the day we met that there was something different about Naomi. Her charity work, her creativity, all prove what a force she is».

Today, 53 years old and a mother of two, her personality continues to “bloom”. In fact, it has never been higher as it continues to defy industry standards and a culture that is “stuck” on youth.
Forget the Kardashians! It was Campbell who made headlines in September when she appeared on the Dolce & Gabbana catwalk in a see-through dress. She made a surprise appearance alongside Annie Lennox at London’s Vogue World and then appeared again for Fendi and Burberry.
Last week, Sarah Burton chose Campbell to close her final show as creative director of Alexander McQueen, prompting a viral video of the model getting emotional as she walked down the runway. Even celebrities half Campbell’s age look to her for inspiration. On Tuesday, “Euphoria” star Zendaya wore a gold Louis Vuitton top, which Campbell was first seen wearing in 2004.

This is not a renaissance, we are in the age of the Renaissance. Osman Ahmeddirector of “iD” magazine notes: “I think what adds to her charm is that she’s a black girl from Streatham who made it without famous parents. The only woman of color in shows and campaigns for decades».
Drawing on her own experiences of racism, including being paid less than her white colleagues, Campbell is an advocate for inclusivity. “Diversity is not a trend,” he told BBC Two’s Newsnight program in 2019.
An “honorary granddaughter” of Nelson Mandela, in 2018 Naomi addressed mourners at Winnie Madikizela-Mandela’s funeral. She has interviewed the Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, for Vogue, and last week, she was snapped dining with the French president.

Today, Campbell appeals not only to Gen X, who grew up with it and has significant purchasing power, but also to Gen Z, a nascent group of consumers.
She was recently named an ambassador for Boss, a spin-off brand of Hugo Boss, which this month launched an ad campaign featuring Campbell alongside TikToker Khaby Lame.
