Like vinyl a few years ago, the cassette seems to be experiencing a renaissance today. Paying tribute to this portable music player, the photographer Amy Corson creates portraits of famous musicians with the black magnetic tape through the cassettes. From rock stars like John Lennon and Tom Petty to famous country music figures like Dolly Parton and Loretta Lynn, the artist pays tribute to figures from a wide range of musical genres.

Corson launched this project of hers with tapes about a decade ago. “I was cleaning out my locker and found a stack of old tapes. With no way to play them anymore, I wondered if I could use them in another way“, he confesses, speaking to My Modern Met. The first portrait he did was that of Bob Dylan. “I selected a tape of Bob Dylan’s “Blood on the Tracks” and pulled out the magnetic tape a bit“, he recalls. “It reminded me of his curly hair, and the rest is history: I spent the entire weekend making a portrait of Dylan, using just the tape and some glue».

She then decided to create portraits of musicians she admired or who had inspired her, using either tapes of the artists or blanks. Since then he has represented the figures of various singers, including John Lennon, Elton John or Tom Petty.

This venture allowed Corson to get closer to things she is passionate about. “Music, like art, is a powerful force that has the ability to move you, question you, and uplift you. I love being able to combine these“, declares.
