The great Italian actress Monica Viti, the Italian actress who illuminated Michelangelo Antonioni’s play, has died at the age of 91, Culture Minister Dario Francescini announced on Wednesday. In the last years of her life she lived isolated in Switzerland with Alzheimer’s disease.

He was born in 1931 in Rome. He starred in films by Luis Buιuel of Dino Rizzi, Mario Monicelli, but became best known mainly in the films of Michelangelo Antonioni, of which he was an artistic muse and companion. In 1968, Antonioni decided to propose to Monica Viti. “It surprised me!”, Viti commented. “Think that we have been living together for eleven years and the issue of marriage has never been raised …”

She has received numerous awards, including 9 David di Donatello Awards, 11 Italian Golden Globes, a Silver Bear for Best Actor and the Honorary Golden Lion for her contribution to cinema.
