The famous actor stopped chemotherapy to try an experimental treatment
Since the 1980s, actor Sam Neill is known to the general public, thanks to films such as “The Hunt for Red October”, “The Piano”, “Thor” and especially the “Jurassic Park” films in the mid-1990s. At 76 years old, he has no intention to “slow down”, despite the fact that he is dealing with a rare blood cancer and at an advanced stage. Now, in an interview, he says that he is ready to die, but not to retire.
Neil revealed his diagnosis in March in his memoir titled “Did I Ever Tell You This?”, which became bestsellers in Australia and New Zealand. In his book, the actor explained that a year ago he was diagnosed with angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphoma (AITL), a rare and advanced cancer. “The thing is, I’m done. I’m probably dying”he wrote then.

The actor gave an interview to ‘Australian Story’ from his ranch in New Zealand, in which he explained that he tries to forget about his illness whenever he can. “I know I have it, but I don’t really care”, he says about his cancer. “I can’t control her. If you can’t control it, don’t bother with it“, he adds, explaining that he leaves everything to his doctors and tries to think about it as little as possible. He acknowledges, however, that the disease occupies – apparently – a large part of his thinking. Still, he’s “grateful to wake up every morning,” he says.
During the interview, the actor explains that when he was diagnosed with cancer, his doctors tried to treat him with chemotherapy for three months, but it did not work well and the tumor continued to grow, so they decided to turn to an experimental treatment. Looks like they got it right and has been in a slump for the last year. But this is not permanent. His doctors explained that at a certain point, which has yet to be determined, the drug will stop working. His hematologists are looking for a third approach to treatment.

Therefore, he takes charge of… his fate. “I’m prepared for it“, says the actor calmly. He lives happily among his animals, his Pinot Noir vineyards and his children and grandchildren on his farm in Otago’s Gibbston Valley. He is divorced from the New Zealand actress, environmental activist and author Lisa Harrow, to whom he was married from 1978 to 1989—they have a son together, Tim. The actor was also married to actress Noriko Watanabe, whom he met while filming Dead Calm in 1989, and with whom he has a daughter, Elena. The couple split in 2015. She is now single and admits she sometimes struggles to deal with loneliness. “Last year I had some very lonely times“, says. And, although she’s been on a few dates, she doesn’t want to look too far ahead: “I’m in a very uncertain world right now. Nothing is sure“, he said.

Sam Neill isn’t worried about death. She accepted him after learning the diagnosis. He finds death “annoying” because he still has a lot to do. However, she does not want to retire from acting. He says this is what fills him with dread. In 2022, the actor released the 10-episode TV miniseries “The Twelve” in 2022 (which he also produced), adapted from the Belgian series of the same name, while this year he has already participated in three films. He has a series and a movie coming out, and is directing and co-starring in another, Apples Never Fall, based on the book by author Liane Moriarty.
