The short film “Halepas”, directed by The Boy and Argyros Chiotis, makes its first online screening today (Wednesday, February 2), on the YouTube Channel of the Onassis Foundation (21:00). The film inaugurates a great tribute to the great artist, with a performance, an exhibition and an edition completing the puzzle of his novel life and creation.
The Onassis Foundation has a large collection of sculptures, drawings, models and molds from works by Gianoulis Halepas. To honor the work of the rare artist, he attempts a dive into the sanctuaries of his artistic genius through the performance “Halepas” (Central Roof Stage, 10-27 February 2022) in libretto by The Boy and directed by Argyros Chiotis, a short film of the same name film by the same creators, the exhibition “Gianoulis Halepas: Dounai kai Lavine” at the Tellogleio Foundation for the Arts of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (February 18 – June 5, 2022) and one edition.
The film was made in the framework of a scholarship for Artistic Research and Development from the Onassis Foundation. During the research, the artistic group first visited Tinos and interviewed residents of the island. At the same time, a first form of libretto was developed by The Boy and music by Jan Van Angelopoulos for the show, while the shooting of the film was completed in Lavrio, Attica, starring Simo Kakala, Maria Panourgia, Georgina Chryskioti.
Through the fragmentary and free narration of the work, an immersion is attempted in the psyche of a man with an inaccessible course, with the mountains, the sea and the winds of Tinos strongly present, a shadow always following, a memory of love springing up, and the battle with the sketch and the sculpture come to life.
Argyro Chioti notes in her diary from the days of artistic research: “Gianoulis climbs the mountain constantly. He went to the mills and sat high, for inspiration, he liked it because he saw the Tower on one side, the Ysternia on the other. The quarry, the great revelation: eerie landscape, futuristic stone catacomb, green marble. A pig carcass thrown in the street in advanced decay. In the quarry, the human body seems minimal. The volumes of the stone stand huge and unquestionable. Maybe we will return for a shoot with Simo, with the folk song of the mother, “the soils, the soils; give me a kiss, give me a kiss … I gave you my name”. First tests with Joe’s naked body, warmth on the ice. The echo of the voice is inconceivable. […] We stayed at the marble school for an hour, we talked with Leonidas Halepas and the marble sculptor George Silikos. The light comes from above natural, from a skylight. Carving in school is music. Trans. Sweet sound despite the hardness of the marble. We will be back for recording. “I am a fairy tale. A fairy tale to tell you?” Gianoulis had said somewhere “.
