Four men have been arrested and charged with the overdose death of actor Michael K. Williams, aged 54. The information was provided by the New York prosecutor, in a statement signed by federal prosecutor Damian Williams, this Wednesday (2).
Williams was found dead in his New York apartment on September 7 of last year. The actor was best known for playing criminal Omar Little in HBO’s crime drama “The Wire”.
One of the men, Irvin Cartagena, was arrested in Puerto Rico. He is charged in a criminal lawsuit filed Tuesday in Manhattan federal court with distributing heroin with fentanyl.
Under another criminal case, also revealed on Wednesday, Hector Robles, Luis Cruz and Carlos Macci were charged with conspiracy for allegedly contributing to the crime. The three men, all from New York’s Brooklyn borough, were arrested on Tuesday, according to authorities.
“This is a public health crisis. And it has to stop. Deadly opioids like fentanyl and heroin don’t care who you are or what you’ve accomplished,” the prosecutor said.
The New York City coroner’s office concluded that Michael K. Williams died of “acute intoxication” from the combined effects of drugs, including the powerful painkiller fentanyl, heroin and cocaine.
