The death of actor Matthew Perry this Saturday (28) significantly increased public interest in the actor’s career. Sales of Perry’s biography, “Friends, Loves and That Terrible Thing”, exploded in just a few hours, which exhausted the stock of the publisher responsible for publication in Brazil and boosted the book to first place on Amazon, where it rose around 125,000 % in sales.

The biography was published in Brazil by BestSeller, an imprint of Grupo Editorial Record. To the F5the group’s editorial director, Cassiano Elek Machado, says that there has been a significant number of sales since Saturday night.

Around 15 thousand copies of the book had been sold since its launch in Brazil, more or less a year ago. “It’s a very positive number for the Brazilian market”, explains Elek. “Currently, he had good, but very stable, sales at a standstill. With the news of his death, sales exploded at the same moment.”

Almost a thousand books were sold in just a few hours. Sales exhausted the current stock of Grupo Editorial Record, which is already preparing a new printing of 10 thousand copies. “We understand that interest in it will continue to be very high in the coming months,” says Elek.

The work also reached first place among Amazon’s best-selling books. On Sunday afternoon (29), the company recorded a 125,582% increase in sales of “Friends, Loves and That Terrible Thing”. Amazon discloses this percentage in the “Trending Products” section, which shows the biggest sales in the last 24 hours.

Movement like this is common, according to Elek. “When a very beloved character dies or something very important happens related to the person, readers are immediately interested in knowing more about that person’s trajectory.”

In the case of Matthew Perry, however, the editorial director says there is “something more”. “It’s a book he wrote himself and it’s recent. A book in which he spoke very openly about the dramas he experienced, issues with drugs, drinks, illnesses, a series of problems he experienced. So, I think This made this interest even greater.”
