Matthew Perry detailed how he would like to be remembered during an interview that took place a year before his death. The actor said that before he was remembered for his role as Chandler Bing on “Friends,” he wanted to be seen as someone who helped others.

In an interview with the podcast “Q with Tom Power” in 2022 to promote his autobiography “Friends, Love and That Terrible Thing”, the actor was asked about the legacy he would like to leave after his death.

“I would like to be remembered as someone who lived well, loved well and was a seeker,” Perry said. “And the most important thing is: someone wants to help people,” the late actor added. “That’s what I want.”

“The great thing about me, without a doubt, is that if an alcoholic or drug addict comes to me and says, ‘Will you help me?’, I can say yes and do it,” he said. “When I die, I don’t want ‘Friends’ to be the first thing mentioned. I want this to be the first thing mentioned, and I’m going to spend the rest of my life proving that.”

That sentiment was echoed in People magazine’s October 2022 cover story, where the actor shared the things he gives himself credit for. This included “taking care of others, never giving up. Helping people as much as I do.”

He added, “It’s probably my favorite thing about myself. Being creative, seeing, learning that if you’re uncomfortable or feeling anxiety, one of the ways to get out of that situation is to be creative.”

Matthew Perry died at age 54. He was found dead in his home in Los Angeles this Saturday (28), according to information from TMZ. The actor was reportedly found in a jacuzzi at the residence. No drugs were found at the scene and there is no evidence of criminal action.

Elsewhere on the podcast, Perry talked about why he couldn’t watch his breakout role as Chandler Bing on “Friends.”

He explained that he could tell “season by season” the stage he was at in his drug and alcohol addiction and detailed: “I didn’t watch the show and I didn’t watch the show because I might drink… opiates… drink… . cocaine. Like, I could tell season by season by the way I looked.”
