by

The Central Archaeological Council (KAS) unanimously gave its opinion on all the studies -architecture, statics and geotechnics- for the restoration of the Bastion of the “Seven Winds” in the New Fortress, which is part of the wider work of restoration and promotion of the Old Town Monuments of Corfu, as informed by an announcement of the Ministry of Culture.

After the positive opinion of the KAS on the studies for the restoration of the Bastion of the “Seven Winds”, the Minister of Culture and Sports Lina Mendoni stated: “The city of Corfu is one of the most important fortified cities in the Mediterranean and one of the most prominent tourist destinations of our country. The Fortresses are included in the monumental integrity of the Old Town and their overall promotion and utilization is a priority for the Ministry of Culture and Sports. The restoration of the Bastion of the “Seven Winds” is part of the wider context of the protection and promotion works of the fortifications that are in progress. Our strategic choice is for the two Fortresses to be treated as a whole in a coordinated and integrated way through the Management Plan prepared by the services of the Ministry of Culture in collaboration with the National Technical University of Athens, utilizing the financial tools of the new NSRF and the Recovery Fund “.

According to the same announcement, the work of restoring the southern wall of the Bastion of the “Seven Winds” in the New Fortress concerns the documentation of the existing situation, the recording of the pathology of its damages and the formulation of the proposed works. Taking into account the pathology of the monument, due to natural and man-made factors that have negatively affected over time, it was deemed imperative to restore the wall in the part that has collapsed, so that the monument, one of the most important landmarks of the Old Town Corfu, to be attributed to the local community and to the visitors of the island.

With the construction of the New Fortress at the end of the 16th century, the Venetians completed the huge task of walling the city and by the first half of the 18th century a new line of defense had been created, isolating the city from the countryside and the sea. The New Fortress is located near the commercial port and is one of the most important and well-preserved monuments of fortification architecture of the 16th – 19th century. in GREECE. To the west, the two bastions of the “Six and Seven Winds” were built, which are connected by a post-tower – connecting wall (cortina). The barracks on the upper level of the fortress were built in 1845.
