Works on the ancient monument to protect it from weather conditions
The Ministry of Culture is proceeding with the protection and promotion of the Peisistratei Wall in the archaeological site of Elefsina by placing new roofs on the surviving parts of the wall.
The Peisistrateian Wall – with which at the end of the 6th century BC. the city of Eleusis was walled for the first time – and the Sanctuary is made of cobblestones.
Aiming at a rational design that simultaneously satisfies the requirements of the protection of the monument and the harmonious integration of the roofs into the archaeological site, the Central Archaeological Museum gave a unanimous positive opinion on the architectural study of the roofs and the study of their static adequacy.
The aim of the study is to protect the monument from the erosive effect of wind, rain and extreme temperatures.
As the Minister of Culture Lina Mendoni stated, “The importance of the Peisistratei Wall is very great, as it is one of the few surviving examples of unbaked brick fortifications.
More than a hundred years after their discovery, the initially clear tumors have in many places lost a significant part of their mass, while the joints are indiscernible.
As documented by the study, the existing canopies do not provide the required protection from the weather. With the installation of new roofs, the maximum possible protection of the remains against weather conditions is achieved and the value of the monument is highlighted.”
The protection of the Peisistrateian Wall is an additional intervention in the archaeological site of Elefsina, where a complex project is already being carried out, which includes the remodeling of the entrance, its connection to the Heroes’ Square, the creation of a new route for the disabled, as well as the overall improvement infrastructure and services to visitors.
In order not to disturb the immediate environment, the design of the extent of the protection shelters is strictly limited to the boundaries of the monument with the aim of harmonizing them with the axes of the plan of the underlying monument on the other hand of strengthening the concept of the continuity of the finds, which although may be interrupted or even at a distance from each other, they are parts of the same whole. For the side covering of the monument, it is recommended to use glass panes in a point support system. In addition, the height of the “Cimonian wall”, which borders to the south, is taken into account, so that it is not negatively affected by the intervention.
