Catalan designer Antonio Miró, a reference in Spanish fashion, has died at the age of 74, after several decades of career in which he took his creations from Barcelona to the main international catwalks.
“May the earth be light to you,” wrote the Spanish Minister of Culture, Miquel Iceta, on his personal Twitter account this Thursday (3).
Miró – born in 1947 in Sabadell, near Barcelona – died of a heart attack, according to various local media reports.
Closely linked to the image of Barcelona, and with marked Mediterranean influences in his projects, Antonio Miró was responsible for creating the uniforms for the ceremonies of the Barcelona 92 Olympic Games, one of the company’s landmarks. He also designed clothes for the regional police and other large companies.
The son of a tailor, the Catalan designer opened his first shop in Barcelona in the late 1960s, when he was just 20 years old. His original designs soon differed from the usual fashion of the time and in 1976 he managed to create his own brand, with which he would later walk on catwalks such as Paris, New York and Tokyo.
“Saddened by the death of Toni Miró, one of the great references of Catalan fashion,” wrote the president of the Catalan regional government, Pere Aragonès, on Twitter in his message of condolences.
“A Barcelonan at heart, creative, innovative, inspiring for many generations and for the Barcelona brand, in the way of making and dressing”, recalled Jaume Collboni, the city’s first deputy mayor. “Without his legacy, you can’t talk about fashion in Barcelona,” he added.
A regular on the catwalks of Madrid and Barcelona for years, Miró won the Cristóbal Balenciaga National Fashion Award in 1987 and the Gold Medal of Fine Arts in 2002, among other awards.
