Street in Oakland, California was renamed Street Tupac Shakur in honor of the late rapper. The street forms part of the city’s MacArthur Avenue, near where Tupac lived in the 1990s.
The street’s official renaming ceremony was attended by members of Shakur’s family, as well as several Bay Area hip-hop legends, including MC Hammer, E-40, Money-B and Too Short.
“May his spirit live on for the rest of his years on these streets and in your hearts” Tupac’s sister, Sekyiwa “Set” Shakur, told the assembled crowd.
“He was the truest rapper. He was very smart, he was a triple threat: movies, rap, poet, everything,” added rapper and record producer E-40. “Wrote positive, self-esteem-boosting music for women, such as “Dear Mama” and “Brenda’s Got a Baby”he emphasized.
MC Hammer said Tupac was “the greatest rapper, no question.”
Shakur died at the age of 25 was shot on September 7 and died on September 13, 1996. The identity of his killer remained a mystery for nearly three decades.
Last week Duane “Keffe D” Davis pleaded not guilty to murdering Tupac in 1996. He was arrested on September 29 and faces a charge of murder with a deadly weapon.
