Maybe it’s time to break out the fairy dresses. The subject of the next Met Gala Revealed: ‘Sleeping Beauties: Fashion Awakening’.
The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute revealed on Wednesday, November 8, 2023, the theme of its spring 2024 exhibition, which opens with the huge party known as the Met Gala. However, the celebrity hosts for the May 6 event have yet to be announced.
The “sleeping beauties”, referred to in the exhibition’s title, are actually precious garments from the museum’s collection that are so fragile, they must be “housed” in glass cases, the curators said. The garments will be displayed in a series of rooms organized around themes of nature.
The Met Gala, which traditionally takes place on the first Monday in May, is one of pop culture’s biggest spectacles, with famous stars like Lady Gaga, Kim Kardashian, Billy Porter and Rihanna donning elegant outfits that appeal to its theme evening. Last year’s gala honored the late designer Karl Lagerfeld.
Curator Andrew Bolton, who is the “mastermind” of all the Met Gala exhibits, explained that the upcoming exhibition includes both rare historical clothing and clothing from contemporary fashion. About 250 garments and accessories spanning four centuries will be on display. The exhibition will last from 10 May to 2 September 2024.
