Shakira, the Latin Grammy Award-winning singeris expected to stand trial on Monday in Barcelona on charges that he defrauded the Spanish tax authorities of 14.5 million euros.
The 46-year-old Colombian musician, who lives in Miami with her two children, faces eight years in prison and a fine of 24 million euros, if found guilty. In order to prove that he was a resident of Spain, the prosecution called 117 witnesses, including hairdressers, dance teachers, therapists, beauticians, gynecologists and her chauffeur.
The singer accuses tax authorities of campaigning to “tarnish her image” and make an example of other Spanish taxpayers, while the prosecution claims she deliberately set out to defraud the public treasury by hiding her earnings in tax havens.
